Putin and Obama Convene at Historic York Inn

YORK, Penn.— Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barak Obama are scheduled to meet today at the Historic York Inn / Smyser Bair House to begin talks on stabilizing the world economy and strengthening relations between the nations of the world.

“When President Obama asked for this meeting, we were surprised he wanted to meet in York,” Putin said. “Later we found out he said New York. But we already had reservations at Historic York Inn and, after seeing the beautiful parlor, didn’t want to change plans.”

Obama agreed on the venue. “My predecessor may have chosen a more ‘Washington-elite’ meeting place, like somewhere in Washington. But look, I believe in change, so we’re meeting in York. That’s change you we can believe in.”

When Russian President Dimitry Medvedev advised Putin that the meeting was set on April Fool’s Day, the meeting was cancelled.

Historic York Inn Featured on National Television

The Following press release about the Historic York Inn / Smyser Bair House was issued by the City of York!

HISTORIC YORK HOME FEATURED ON NATIONAL TV

On December 1 at 5 p.m., a historic home in the heart of downtown York’s historic district will be featured on HGTV’s program, If Walls Could Talk: Hidden Treasures.

The home is known by many Yorkers as the Smyser-Bair House. It was owned by Dr. Henry Smyser in the 1800s and passed through his daughter into the Bair family. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Victorian home was open to the public as The Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast.

Viewers of the program will enjoy seeing some of the treasures hidden inside the home: one-of-a kind, gilded Pier mirrors, the elaborate parlor, an original crystal chandelier converted from candle to electric, a unique gaselier, and a signature in the attic dating back to the 1800s.

The crew came to film the Smyser-Bair House before the current owners purchased the home in December, so the program is already a bit of history itself.

The new owners have plans to reopen the home as a bed and breakfast in the near future. At the moment, they are busy getting the home ready, and promoting their new full-color, hardcover story book for children: Flightless Goose. You can learn more about Flightless Goose at http://www.rungoose.com/.

Look for the reopening of The Historic York Inn – Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast sometime in 2009.

In the meantime, you have the opportunity to catch a glimpse on December 1 at 5 p.m. on HGTV’s If Walls Could Talk: Hidden Treasures.

Front Page News: Historic York Inn

If you read The York Dispatch, then you probably saw the article about The Historic York Inn. After all, it was on the front page!

The front page headline read: Couple opens B&B in the heart of York.

The story was written by Dispatch reporter Daina Klimanis.

In the story, Daina wrote about the owners’ not-too-long-ago visit to a bed and breakfast in upstate New York, and how the writer-and-artist pair thought owning their own bed and breakfast would be a dream come true.

Then, as though dictated by fate, they found the Smyser Bair mansion up for sale at 30 South Beaver Street – once home to the prominent Smyser family, then passed on through marriage to the Bair family, and eventually opened as a successful bed and breakfast in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Dispatch described the parlor “a soaring room with sky-blue walls, flowing drapes over the windows and hand-carved mirrors leafed in gold Smyser brought back from his Gold Rush adventures.” The story went on to say that “The parlor could be the perfect venue for receptions.”

The story described The Historic York Inn as “good news to the city's economic development office, where officials have long said a bed-and-breakfast would contribute to the city's tourism offerings.”

"It's an outstanding thing for the city," said Kevin Schreiber, coordinator of marketing and economic development for the City of York.

The Historic York Inn is proud to be an important part of the City of York!
